ZiggSend vs USB cable (MTP and iTunes) · Head to head

ZiggSend vs USB cable

A cable is fast and needs no cloud. It’s the protocol running over it that lets you down: MTP does one operation at a time with no check, and it’s widely reported to stall or skip files in large folders; on iPhone, importing can convert HEIC/HEVC, and iTunes syncs instead of copying.

What it does well

  • USB 3 speed when both cable and port are USB 3
  • No cloud, no account
  • Already in your drawer

Where it stops

  • MTP (Android): one operation at a time; frequent reports of copies that stall or skip files in large folders
  • On iPhone, photos and videos come out through the Photos app or Image Capture, which can convert them unless the iPhone is set to “Keep Originals”; everything else depends on iTunes/the Apple Devices app, which syncs instead of copying
  • No check on what arrived

When to use which

A cable with MTP to pull half a dozen files and check them by hand. ZiggSend over a cable, from Android to Mac, for a whole camera roll, with resume and verification; or over Wi-Fi, for any pair, when there’s no cable around.

Measured, not promised. 22 GB in 184 files with 0 failures from an Android to a Mac over a USB 2 cable (about 28 MB/s); an 806 MB video over home Wi-Fi in 46 s; up to 49.7 MB/s over Wi-Fi from a Mac to an iPhone. Every file is checked against the original on arrival. How we measure.

Phone app always free. Computer: 30 days free.

The phone apps are always free. The computer app is 30 days free with everything unlocked — several phones, full history, automatic folders, up to 3 computers — then $4.99, paid once.

Questions people actually ask

Does ZiggSend use the cable?

Yes, from Android to Mac: the assistant sets it up once and the Mac pulls over USB debugging — over a USB 2 charging cable we measured about 28 MB/s.

Why does MTP skip files?

It’s a mid-2000s protocol, built for portable media players, that does one operation at a time and doesn’t check what arrived. The symptom is widely reported: in large folders, files get left out or the copy freezes, with no warning.

Will the charging cable from the box work?

Yes: we measured about 28 MB/s with a USB 2 charging cable. USB 3 has more headroom, but needs a USB 3 cable and port — and we haven’t measured ZiggSend on one yet.
