PC not recognizing the phone over USB: what to check

Charging is not the same as connecting. When the PC shows nothing, it is the cable, the USB mode on the phone, the driver, or the port — in that order of likelihood.

1. Switch the phone from “Charging only” to “File transfer”

Android plugs in as charge-only by default. Pull down the notification shade, tap the USB notification and pick File transfer / Android Auto (MTP). On Samsung it may say “Transferring files”. Without this, Windows sees a charger, not a phone.

2. Change the cable

Charge-only cables are everywhere. Use the one from the box or one marked for data. If the phone flickers between connected and disconnected, the cable is failing.

3. Change the port, avoid hubs

Front-panel ports and unpowered hubs drop MTP connections. Use a port on the back of a desktop or a direct port on a laptop.

4. Unlock the phone and keep the screen on

MTP only works with the phone unlocked. Big folders time out if the screen locks halfway through.

5. Driver on Windows

Device Manager → the phone with a yellow mark → Update driver → “MTP USB Device”. Samsung and Xiaomi also ship their own USB drivers on their support sites.

6. Big folders skip files

Even when it works, MTP runs one operation at a time, and users widely report copies that stall or leave files out on large folders, with no check at the end. That comes from the protocol, not from your phone. For a camera roll, a direct transfer over Wi-Fi or a proper cable mode is the reliable path.

iPhone: a different story

The iPhone needs the Apple driver and the “Trust This Computer” tap — see the iPhone guide linked below.

Skip the cable: send over your Wi-Fi

Install ZiggSend on the PC and the free app on the phone. Same Wi-Fi, tap Connect to a computer, pick the PC and click Allow on it, and the files land in a folder, each verified byte for byte. (On a Mac, ZiggSend also has a real cable mode for Android — its own connection instead of MTP — set up once by its assistant.)

Measured, not promised. 22 GB in 184 files with 0 failures from an Android to a Mac over a USB 2 cable (about 28 MB/s); an 806 MB video over home Wi-Fi in 46 s; up to 49.7 MB/s over Wi-Fi from a Mac to an iPhone. Every file is checked against the original on arrival. How we measure.

What people ask before they trust a transfer app

“I don’t trust my private photos to a site I don’t know.”

Neither do we. ZiggSend has no site in the middle: the file goes from one device to the other over your home Wi-Fi (or, from Android to a Mac, a cable), and no file is stored anywhere else. The computer app only contacts ZiggSend to check for updates, to register a random install ID when it opens and, if you go Pro, to activate the license and check its status once a day; the privacy policy lists exactly what goes out.

“Mine fails at 64% every time.”

A transfer that breaks resumes where it stopped. Every file is written as a temporary part and only gets its final name after the SHA-256 check passes — you never end up with a half file that looks whole.

“I’m out of space and need to empty the phone.”

Move everything to the computer first: only files that pass the SHA-256 check get their final name, and History shows each fingerprint (today’s on Free, all of them on Pro). Then delete on the phone. Originals, no size limit.

Free forever with 1 phone. Pro when you need it.

The phone apps are free. So is the computer app, with one paired phone. Pro — several phones, full history, automatic folders, up to 3 computers — is $39 a year, or $19 once for the first 1,000 founders.

Questions people actually ask

Do I need USB debugging?

Not for MTP: file transfer mode is enough. ZiggSend on Windows works over Wi-Fi, no cable. The Mac app’s cable mode does use USB debugging, and its assistant walks you through turning it on, once.

Why does Windows say the device is unreachable?

The phone locked or the cable dropped mid-copy. Keep the screen on, use a data cable, and copy in smaller batches — or go over Wi-Fi.

Is wifi slower than the cable?

Not necessarily. Over home Wi-Fi we measured 17.5 to 49.7 MB/s; over a USB 2 charging cable in the Mac app’s cable mode, about 28 MB/s (Android to Mac). We have not measured a USB 3 cable yet. Both verify every file.

Does it work wirelessly, over wifi, without a cable?

Yes: phone and computer on the same Wi-Fi, tap Connect to a computer, pick the computer (or scan its QR code), check the safety code on both screens and allow it on the computer. No internet, no account, nothing uploaded — the file goes straight from one device to the other, verified byte for byte. An 806 MB video took 46 s on home Wi-Fi in our measurement.

Laptop or MacBook instead of a desktop — any difference?

None. A MacBook is a Mac and a laptop is a PC: same app, same steps. The only practical difference is that laptops are usually on Wi-Fi, which is exactly the path ZiggSend uses — no cable, no dock, no adapter.
